Grand Army Plaza & the Vanderbilt Mansion

Due south of the Pulitzer fountain is Bergorf-Goodman, which has been there since Herman Bergdorf and Edwin Goodman commissioned it in 1928.  But in Pulitzer’s day, it was the home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, grandson of Cornelius I, who founded the family railroad empire.  Amazingly, this was only one of ten gilded mansions built by the Vanderbilt heirs along 5th avenue.
